HVTI has incorporated the suggestions and comments of Volunteer Coordinators from
around the country that were compiled from our National Hospice Volunteer Training
Survey (purchase this report from Caregiver's
Store). The survey respondents represented over 30,000 patients served annually
by nearly 7,000 volunteers. This data (see preview)
was used by our curriculum planners to guide them in the development of the HVTI
volunteer training program development.

The infrastructure for the institute is now in place and course development is underway.
HVTI expects to have its initial courses online by summer 2009.

The HEAL Project has created the National Council on Hospice Volunteer Education
(NCHVE). This council is made up of national visionaries that are guiding the
development of the HVTI curriculum and assisting in defining the national certification
program for volunteers and volunteer managers.

The Hospice Volunteer Association (HVA) created the National
Hospice Document Repository (NHDR) as a public service to the hospice community.
Some of the ways that we hope this repository will assist the community are:
- providing a venue for hospice volunteer coordinators/managers to
share training materials, volunteer program descriptions, volunteer job descriptions,
outreach brochures, etc. with their colleagues.
- to share information relating to events, conferences, retreats and
workshops that would be of value and interest to the hospice volunteer community.
- to share articles and other types of information that would be of
interest to the hospice community.
Using the NHDR is now much easier. We have made it very easy for members of the
hospice community to upload documents they wish to share. You can now perform searches
for documents in the repository using key words.
Search and access hundreds of hospice-related documents -- download
them for free! The HVA repository is one of the largest free sources
of hospice-related information in the world.

The HEAL Project started the pilot program for its Hannah's Friends community volunteer
program in Northern CA. This program is supporting the families of children with a life-threatening
illness. Hannah's Friends now has its own website. Click

The HEAL Project's Community Outreach Program in Education (COPE)
provides a free knowledge base for those who are or will be embarking upon a caregiving
journey for a friend or family member.
- Series I - Caring for a Terminally
ill Loved One - Making Compassionate Choices: this series focuses on the
various facets of caregiving starting with the diagnosis of a terminal illness through
to death and the bereavement period that follows.
- Series II - Caring for a Child
Approaching the End of Life and Keeping the Family Together: Families that
are caring for a child with a life-limiting or life-threatening illness face formidable
emotional, psychological and spiritual challenges. This series provides useful information
that will help guide and support them on their journey, easing the uncertainty of
what lies ahead.
